The study examined how learning engagement affects the relationship between self-determination motivation and English proficiency. It involved 233 high school students who completed questionnaires to assess their motivation, learning engagement, English classroom enjoyment, and English proficiency. The study also analyzed differences based on gender and grade level, as well as mediating effects among the variables. The results found that male students scored higher on autonomous motivation, English classroom enjoyment, and learning engagement than female students. First graders scored higher on autonomous and controlled motivation, English classroom enjoyment, and learning engagement than second graders. In addition, the results found the mediating effect of English classroom enjoyment on the relationship between self-determined motivation and learning engagement. Self-determined motivation has a direct effect on learning engagement and an indirect effect through English classroom enjoyment. Moreover, the study shows that learning engagement acts as a mediator between self-determined motivation and English proficiency, indicating that self-determined motivation leads to higher English proficiency through increased learning engagement. Overall, the study’s results emphasize the importance of learning engagement in promoting Korean students’ positive learning experiences and English proficiency.
