The purpose of the present study was to identify EFL high school students’ motivating and demotivating factors in learning English. It further examined differences in motivation and demotivation factors depending on the students’English proficiency level. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from a total of 455 Korean high school first year students. The three research questions were examined using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and inductive content analyses. Results of the study showed that instrumental motivation (prevention and promotion) and ought L2 self were the strong motivating factors toward learning English, while difficulty in learning English and the lack of self-confidence due to learning failures were found to be playing a significant role in demotivating students. Subsequent qualitative content analyses also supported these quantitative results. It was also found that there were significant English proficiency effects on some motivating and demotivating factors. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications and research suggestions are discussed along with the limitations of the study.
