Since Cubism overthrew the traditional way of expression, many artists began to deny figurative art and break away from the figurative material world. Looking back at the background of the development of Western abstract art in the 20th century, many long-accepted beliefs faced various struggles in the early 20th century. Many artists like Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944),Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) and Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (1879-1935) began to turn to abstract art creation during outbreak of WW1 from 1914 to 1918. Their creations were based on philosophy or mystical doctrine, concerned the universe, and abandon the “soulless materialism” of 19th century, and hoping to find new spiritual support. Suprematism, led by Malevich, became dominant during the Russian avant-garde. From outbreak of WW1 in 1914 to the early 1920s, Suprematism and Constructivism appeared successively, these two art movements had huge impact on post-war Western Europe. Malevich, the advocate of suprematism, expounds the experience of chaotic real life, the concern for society and the philosophy of life in the form of pure non-objective geometric. Malevich created the black square in 1915 and successfully liberated from the expression of objectivity. This thesis mainly focuses on the thinking, theory and form of Malevich’s establishment of suprematism. Malevich expresses his life in a “supreme” form, excluding figurative natural elements, metaphorize his inner experience from pure abstract geometric shapes, using eternal, stable squares and pure colors as medium to open up his “inner world”.
