This paper aims to analyze the subtle semantic distinctions among prepositions, before, in front of, and for, particularly focusing on the concept of FRONT. It places special emphasis on two alignment dynamics of the Trajector and Landmark within space, as proposed by Hill(1978): mirror-image alignment (where the Trajector and Landmark face each other), and intandem alignment (where they align in concert in the same front-back orientation). The paper also explores the historical and contemporary usage of these prepositions across both spatial and non-spatial contexts. Traditional descriptive grammar has often provided simplistic explanations for these prepositions. Before has become largely obsolete in spatial contexts, with its usage primarily shifting towards temporal sequencing. In contrast, the pure spatial in front of, a relatively recent addition to the English preposition list during the Middle English period, appears to have assumed the spatial role previously held by before. However, the current polysemy of for has not been adequately addressed, in terms of its etymological connection to the spatial FRONT, since it has gradually lost its spatial connotations over time. This study combines etymological insights with alignment configurations to offer a more coherent account of the distinct semantic territories of these three prepositions.
