The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of blended learning on preservice music teachers’ self-directed learning and problem solving. Blended learning was incorporated in the subject titled ‘Introduction to Music Education,’ and the survey and reflective journals were collected from 39 preservice music teachers. The results of this study were as follows. First, the combination of theory and practice in blended learning positvely affected preserivce music teachers’ learning need diagnosis among self-directed learning skills, but it did not influece on choosing learning strategies. Consequently, when teacher educators plan blended learning environment, it is necessary to help preservice music teachers learn how to devise learning strategies. Second, the interaction among peers and between learners and a professor in blended learning enabled preservice music teachers to get more divergent thinking among problem solving skills. Third, reflective journal in blended learning was the main element to positvely affect evaluation element in self-directed learning and problem solving skills. Teacher educators need to give frequent feedback on reflective journals and increase the number of reflective journals so that they could help preservice music teachers improve self-directed learning and problem solving skills.
