This study attempted to compare and analyze the books included in the collections of 「Kyujang Chongmok」 and 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」. Through an in-depth discussion, this study reached the following conclusions.
First, it was found that there was a systematic difference between the classification systems of 「Kyujang Chongmok」 and 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」. This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that the classification systems were defined in the 多寡 of the books. Whereas 「Kyujang Chongmok」 adopts the four-categorical classification model as its classification system, several differences can be observed between the classification systems they use on the ground that 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」 preserves certain autonomy while selecting a classification system. However, there are some instances where the scholarly character of the books included in a specific 類 of 「Kyujang Chongmok」 does not adhere to the scholarly character of the origins of that 類.
Second, to compare several aspects regarding the books included in 「Kyujang Chongmok」 and 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」, this study primarily examined whether the books included in 「Kyujang Chongmok」 were also contained in 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」. The results demonstrated that about 70% of the 134 books included in 「Kyujang Chongmok」 were 歷史學 books written in the Ming and Qing periods. In addition, 77 (approximately 57.4%) of the 134 books were also involved in 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」. Among these, the number of books contained in 正目 was 57 (approximately 42.5%), and 20 books (approximately 14.9%) were included in 存目. By comparison, the number of books that were a part of 「Kyujang Chongmok」 but not involved in 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」 amounted to 57 (approximately 42.5%).
Third, when the books included in「Kyujang Chongmok」 were examined in terms of whether they were a part of 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」, it was found that they included contents such as ｢重視 concerning 正史｣, 「重視 concerning 明史｣, and ｢the contents of 禁燬 書籍｣.
Based on the above findings, this study found that 「Kyujang Chongmok」 represented more than a mere collection of books in the royal library of the late Joseon Dynasty. It was an academic document comparable to 「Sago Jeonseo Chongmok」, which explained the fundamental scholarly trends followed by the Joseon royal family and the late 18th century’s academic circles.
