This paper examines D. H. Lawrence’s ontological thinking in “The Crown” in relation to Quentin Meillassoux’s speculative realism and Graham Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology. The three thinkers share anti-anthropocentric and realist concerns in common, but when it comes to explaining the reality of beings, their differences are phenomenal. Lawrence’s extended critique of reductionism may well be applied to Meillassoux’s scientific and mathematical approach, while the notion in the former of the emergence of being from relations, which is the co-emergence of being and relationship, contradicts that of the advent ex nihilo in the latter. Likewise, Lawrence’s account of what he calls ‘the third reality,’ or ‘the Holy Ghost,’ as something achieved instead of being just given, disrupts at some fundamental level Harman’s non-relational, and rather static, model of objects that maintains a sharp distinction between unchanging reality and changeable sensuality. For Lawrence, reality and relatedness, the absolute and the relative, are only two faces of the same coin.
