Spinoza’s anti-Cartesian and monistic viewpoint anticipates, in some important ways, Lawrence’s thoughts on life and art. Their shared emphasis on impersonal and differential power is remarkable, as is the affinity between their insights into the embodied and affective nature of beings and their relationships. Lawrence, however, draws us into problematics that significantly are not addressed by Spinoza. They include: being as an achievement of living beings; the affective quality of truth; and the distinction of feeling and emotion, which is analogous if not identical to that of affect and emotion highlighted by Massumi). A historical perspective is called for when considering this difference. Lawrence’s discourse on feeling implies a critique of sentimentalism, while the philosopher of the 17th century was not in a position to reflect on feeling as ’the carrier of truth’.
