This article studies the origin and evolution of the unicorn Qilin, which is revered in traditional Chinese culture. Through some research, the author can know as follows: the "Lin Zhi Zhi"(The Foot of Qilin) chapter in the Book of Songs and the "Huo Lin"(Obtain Qilin) story in the Spring and Autumn Annals are the origins of the Chinese cultural symbol of the Qilin; During the prevalence of divination in the Han Dynasty, different images of Qilin were intertwined and confused with each other; Qilin was originally one of the “Siling”(Four Spirits), but gradually lost its original position during the Han Dynasty, and was eventually replaced by Xuanwu. In addition, the status and connotation of the Qirin continue to fall into a drifting being. However, the Qilin regained its vitality in folk narratives, and its image became a pattern that implied folk wishes, such as “Qilingyushu”(the Qilin spits jade book) and “Qilinsongzi”(the Qilin giving birth), which were adopted in various artworks. Especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the image of the Qilin in the popular "Konzishengjitu“(Confucius" Sacred Monuments) represents the emergence of the official and folk shared Qilin narrative and culture.
