This article tries to analyze the contemporary and political perceptions of the enlightened conservative group, who also could be defined as the Confucian group(孔敎派) at that time. The priority of the Confucian group was to enhance their political power in the public sphere. They advocated the re-establishment of the emperor, supporting both the constitution and the Confucian religion so that they could get back into the public sphere. Their ideas were based on meritocracy(賢能主義,選賢與能). The only representatives building new China, with the emperor and within the boundary of the constitution, were the literati class, who were carefully selected because of the representative"s ability to govern. The group thought that the descendant of the Qing Dynasty or Confucius should be the emperor, while the "Confucian literati who are well-read and disciplined" should took the official posts given by the limited and restricted suffrage so they would support the emperor"s policy. For that matter, the group considered the dynamic between the emperor and the literati officials, while neglecting the empowerment of the nation(民). These kind of political agenda and movement that the Confucian group promoted were highly criticized by the younger generation, such as the editors and writers of the New Youth(新靑年).
This article explained how the Confucian Group tried to adapt to the Western political system, while mastering it at a same time. Their practice could be considered as an example of the "Theory of Double Project of Modernity." For example, the Confucian group had two scholars: Shen Cengzhi(沈曾植), and Kang Youwei(康有爲). The two people argued differently on the "sacred soul(內聖)" and the "external power(外王)". They had their differences, but their different opinions were also balanced in the group. They exerted their ideas on "soul" and "power" to recognize the Confucian religion and the emperor"s position with realizing constitutional practices. They tried to adapt into Western system, but also overcome it. However, their political agenda dissolved while the balance they had broken, since the restoring the emperor became the main argument. As a result, only "external power" has left after the dissolution.
The Confucian group saw right through the characteristics of Western capitalism and imperialism, but they were only eager to put China back into the global powers. Their endeavors came to a conclusion, when their religious movement and their trial for the emperor restoration had defeated. How Chinese people, who were excluded from the capitalism seek their way from the socialism, was not much of a consideration to the Confucian group. The 1919 May Fourth Movement attacked the Confucian group, which highly promoted anti-Confucianism and anti-Chinese traditions.
