In his numerous writings and lectures, Bruno Latour argued with his Actor-Network eory(ANT) that questions of epistemology are not unrelated to the political. This has led philosophers like Graham Harman to categorize Latour as a political philosopher and analyze the trajectory of his thoughts. According to Harman, Latour’s starting point as a political thinker was the 17th-century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, best known as the author of Leviathan(1651). is paper contends that Harman’s interpretation is based on a misunderstanding of Latour’s instrumentalist stance towards Hobbes. It demonstrates that Latour was less concerned with the political implications of Leviathan and instead more interested in its constructability and deconstructability (or, in his term, “unscrew”-ability), i.e., Leviathan’s ephemeral status as an artifact. In other words, what Latour sought was to reveal how actors come together in networks to exert power at any given time and in any given space, without making a priori distinctions between human/non-human, subject/object, state/individual, etc. This paper argues that Latour’s theoretical perspectives remained considerably consistent as they were applied to global ecological issues, rather than being changed under the inuence of political philosophers.
