College entrance examinations, where the various interests of students get intertwined, are a sensitive topic at the political and social level in North Korea.
In North Korean society, where the 12-year system of compulsory education is implemented for all citizens, the benefits of education for each individual begin when they enter university. Therefore, a college entrance exam is an area of greatest interest from the perspective of students. It is also important to the North Korean government, which is an education provider. This is because it is the first step in fostering cadres who play a central role in maintaining the system by enduring chronic economic difficulties by examining party affiliation and loyalty to the government. Furthermore, it represents a crossroad in selecting and deploying human resources.
Therefore, this study attempted to gain an in-depth understanding of North Korean society, including North Korean education, by analyzing the diverse and dynamic relationships derived from college entrance exams. The actors of North Korean education form North Korea"s college entrance exam culture by interacting with each other through instrumentalism.
In this study, the entrance exam culture formed throughout North Korean society through education policies and official curriculum, mainly from the perspective of the Kim Jong-un regime, which monopolizes the right to control education, is defined as the “intentional entrance exam culture.” It is not intended or planned by the North Korean authorities or the Kim Jong-un regime. The unofficial entrance exam culture generated by the interaction between the social background and North Korean society members was classified as “developed entrance exam culture” to analyze the entrance exam culture in North Korean society.
Differences surrounding college entrance exams under the Kim Jong-un regime and previous regimes have begun to be clearly revealed, and it is understood that North Korea is reconstructing the educational culture through a new entrance exam culture.
