This study attempted to analyze whether the educational gap according to the family background occurred in terms of the educational process and results during the COVID-19 period. To this end, the Seoul Educational Policy Institute conducted a verification of differences by family background using data from middle school students in the first year of the 『SELS 2020(Seoul Educational Longitudinal Study of 2020)』 collected in 2021. After that, FGI was conducted for teachers and education professions in Seoul to analyze the causes of the educational gap and find solutions. The main findings are as follows. First, as a result of examining the gap that occurred during the ‘process’, it was found that there was a large difference according to the family background in terms of home care. FGI participants interpreted that the degree of management and support of students varies greatly depending on their family background, and students from low-income families spend longer time using digital devices than other groups. It was proposed as an alternative to strengthening parent education in connection with the local community and developing interesting learning contents to positively induce time to use digital devices at home. Second, in terms of the ‘results’ of education, students showed a large difference according to their family background not only in cognitive achievement but also in non-cognitive aspects such as society and emotions. FGI participants cited the lack of ‘tweezers support’ for students from low-income families to cultivate their shortcomings, and the lack of monitoring of existing education gap policies. It was suggested to provide tweezers support in public education through student-tailored education, systematic integration between existing educational gap policies, and close monitoring.
