This study investigated six elementary science gifted students’ problem solving process on the different types of problems. Students were asked to solve two problems requiring logical thinking and two problems requiring openness using think aloud method. Analyses frameworks for two types of problems were constructed based on students’ problem solving. Using the analysis frameworks, the processes and characteristics of problem solving were analysed. In case of solving problems requiring logical thinking, students who succeeded used variety of methods in order to understand the problems, such as asking questions, thinking, selective reading, redescribing problems as well as reading problem itself. The students who failed, however, simply read problem itself and/or misinterpreted the data. In case of solving problems requiring openness, students who succeeded also used variety of methods in order to understand the problems. The students who failed, however, simply read problem itself. It showed the importance of understanding problems for successful problem solving.
