This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of Japanese ironic utterances. Based on the examination of inappropriateness of ironic utterances presented in previous studies, this study explored how these characteristics appear in Japanese ironic utterances. In addition, it examined the concept of appropriateness for utterances that cannot be explained only by inappropriateness with the concept of appropriateness. As a result, although inappropriateness was prominent in ironic utterances in Japanese, appropriateness also accounted for a significant portion, suggesting that appropriateness plays an important role in ironic utterances. More specifically, while the characteristics of infelicitous questions, inappropriate style, and emphasis were prominently displayed in the case of inappropriateness, the following characteristics were prominently displayed in the case of appropriateness: analogy, comparison/contrast, and generalization. In addition, it was found that the characteristics of appropriateness had a neutral personality against inappropriateness and appropriateness, and had strong contextual dependence. On the other hand, the interpersonal effect of ironic utterances appeared in positive and negative aspects. This is not because of the inherent properties of specific expressions, but depending on the expressions used together or contexts. It means that the interpersonal effect is also strong contextual dependence.
