In this study, the utterances of the needs of sympathy that appeared in the discussion of Japanese female native speakers and Korean female native speakers were analyzed. The data is the conversation of friends who were five pair of Japanese Native Speakers and five pairs of Korean Native Speakers. The utterances of the needs of sympathy are classified according to 〈general knowledge〉, 〈personal experience and opinion〉, 〈merits of speaker’s opinion〉 and 〈demerits of opponent’s opinion〉.
As the result, the utterances of the needs of sympathy were expressed twenty times in the conversation of Japanese native speakers and fifty-two times in the conversation of Korean native speakers.
The utterances of 〈merits of speaker’s opinion〉〈general knowledge〉 were expressed mostly in utterance of Japanese native speakers. The utterances of 〈merits of speaker’s opinion〉 were expressed mostly in utterance of Korean native speakers. The frequency of utterances of 〈personal experience and opinion〉, 〈merits of speaker’s opinion〉, 〈demerits of opponent’s opinion〉 were also high.
Japanese Native Speakers had carefully demand expression than strong expression in the utterances of the needs of sympathy. Furthermore Japanese Native Speakers frequently alleviate own opinion with mention of demerits of own opinion and merits of opponent’s opinion. As the result, Japanese Native Speakers’ pattern that accepts the utterances of the needs of sympathy of the opposite party appeared uniformly.
Korean Native Speakers frequently had expression to persuade the opposite party. There was the trend to express 〈merits of own opinion〉 and 〈demerits of opponent’s opinion〉 together in Korean Native Speakers’ utterances of the needs of sympathy. Furthermore the opposite party also expressed the utterances of the needs of sympathy. So, Korean Native Speakers’ utterances of the needs of sympathy were frequently expressed and the contents had various results. These characters of the utterance barely seem to arise easily the conflict with the opposite party. However this phenomenon seems like a method that asserts own opinion to persuade the opposite party.
