Chang Dai-Chien(張大千, 1899-1983) was one of the most influential painters in the contemporary Chinese painting history and the world-class artist whose name was famous abroad. Unlike other artists who accepted positively the realistic Western styles in his era, Chang Dai-Chien understood and acquired deeply the ideas, aesthetic perspectives, and expressional techniques, etc. of the traditional Chinese paintings. At the same time, he created his own creative world of the arts combining his artistic features and aesthetic ideas based on them. The ‘Splashed Ink and Color(潑墨潑彩) Landscape Painting created by him, going beyond the traditional painting techniques, is the modern reinterpretation of landscape paintings, and pioneered the new space in the contemporary Chinese paintings. Chang Dai-Chien’s Splashed Ink and Color Landscape Painting is harmonized with ink and color on screen, with the form combining naturally abstract planes expressed spiritually and specific images described with delicate lines(線描) of fine brush works(工筆). Chang Dai-Chien had sufficient understanding of the principles of caligraphy(用筆法) and the principles of ink, and added blue-and-green landscape painting(靑綠山水) and deep-color pigment technique(眞彩) from Dunhuang Murals(敦煌壁?), resulting in splendid and beautiful colors. He created his original arts in a kind of new form through his experiences and studies about the integration of Chinese and Western painting styles. Chang Dae-Chien’s Splashed Ink and Color Landscape Paintings became a role model to solve the task of the era, the innovation of Chinese paintings pursed by the artists’ group at that time, and played a leading role for the next generation’s artists to develop and grow their own arts, suggesting aesthetic standards and orientations for developing color landscape paintings.
