This research is aimed at understanding the camera preferences of university students who are conducting their ESL classes online. To discover why the students prefer the camera on, or if the students prefer to remain anonymous as well as the reasons given for their preference. The study consists of 344 university students overall, while a smaller sampling of 86 students make up the data for the main study. The participants were able to choose to have their cameras on or off for the first three weeks of their online classes. A survey administered their camera preferences. In week four students were all told to have their cameras off during online class and afterwards were surveyed to determine how they felt about class. In week five students were all told to have their cameras on during online class and afterwards were surveyed to determine how they felt about class. The data was analyzed and results were used to prove or disprove the hypotheses. An overwhelming percentage of students chose not to use the camera during online classes, and the reasons given included shyness, appearance, inability to focus, and lack of control at their viewing location. The reasons for students non camera usage was then considered against the benefits the educators derive from being able to see the learners during class, and suggestions for improving future online classes were given.
