This study investigates how Palhae is described in the textbooks in Korea, China, and Japan based on tthe text structure and the rhetorical expression. In terms of the text structure, Korean History consists of horizontal semantic relationships through the comparison with Silla, whereas Japanese History and Chinese History form vertical semantic relationships to complement the logic of national history. The depiction of Palhae in the latter reveals the surface coherence which is an additional type of subordinate hierarchy under the national logic and the deep-rooted coherence that strengthens the relative predominance of the National History. In terms of the rhetorical expression, the textbooks in all three countries primarily consist of a list style and a concise style, while causal type or the assertive type, and the rhetorical expression are rarely used. These exceptional characteristics are mainly concentrated on the specific parts in the textbooks, strengthening text coherence with the aim of nationalistic interpretation of Palhae. On the other hand, the description of Palhae in the sample government-made textbooks of Korean History is followed by some worries that the text coherence for the horizontal semantic relationship may be regressed.
