Most historians have insisted that the linguistic turn made historical research impossible. It could be argued, however, that their criticisms of the linguistic turn came from misunderstandings. Instead of making historical studies impossible, the linguistic turn has a positive relevance to history which has emphasized the exact description of reality by re-defining the process of production of historical knowledge. By examining several important issues that the linguistic turn has raised, this essay aims to correct historians’ misapprehension about the linguistic turn on the one hand, and to elucidate the significance of the linguistic turn in relation to an epistemological aspect of historical writing. In particular, this essay examined the way in which history achieved its own academic and scientific authority by calling attention to the “historical poetics” in which historical writing employed literary devices such as footnotes and the present tense to present itself as a science. Lastly, this essay maintains that it is historians who believe reality exists prior to language that have unconsciously advanced the end of history: if reality determines the discourse of history, it means that the meaning of historical interpretation is ultimately fixed. It is this notion that blocks up the open-ended possibilities of re-interpretation.
