This study set out to investigate Ganjae Jeon Woo(1841~1922)'s criticism of Seongri theory by the Hwaseo School and his problematic consciousness about it. Jeon Woo systematically established his Seongri theory under the influence of his predecessors in the Nak School as well as his master Gosan Im Heon-hoi(1811~1876). After having a debate over the Seongri theory with the Hwaseo School, he got to build a more exquisite system for his Seongri theory. He especially said that the premise of "Simbonseong" was established based on his debate with Yu Jung-gyo of the Hwaseo School, which indicates that his debate over the Seongri theory with the Hwaseo School was a very significant event for the systemization of his own Seongri theory. There is thus no denying the huge importance of the debate with the Hwaseo School in the establishment of Jeon Woo's Seongri theory system and criteria to criticize other schools. The present study examined in what aspects he criticized the Seongri theory of the Hwaseo School and what kind of problematic consciousness he had about the Seongri theory of the Hwaseo School, thus shedding clear light on the early formation process of his Seongri theory and his criteria to criticize heresy at the forefront of criticism of other schools in the Neo-Confucian circles in late Joseon.
