This article investigates the historical 'existence' of Yi Wan-Bal (李完發), by reviewing the 'story' about him as written in the ' Euisa Yi Man-Chwi Jeon(義士李晩翠傳; The Story of the Righteous Patriot Yi Man-Chwi)', in the 『 Yiwoodangyugo(二友堂 遺稿)』 witten by Jeong Dae-Pil(鄭大弼).
The author, Jeong Dae-Pil was a Confucian scholar from a renowned family in the region of Geochang. Yi Wan-Bal, or Yi Man-Chwi, was his first teacher who taught basic Confucian knowledges to the author, and later brought his former student to the Hwaseo School for extensive researches on the Neo-Confucianism. After acquiring the Theory of Fidelity(義理論), Jeong became one of the leading figures of the March 1st movement in the Geochang Region in 1919, when the movement was spreading nationwide.
Yi Wan-Bal, as described in the 『Yiwoodangyugo(二友堂遺稿)』, was a student of the Hwaseo School with strong spirit and anti-Japanese sentiment. When the Japanese Empire exposed its ambition to invade and colonize the Daehan Empire, Yi Wan-bal fought against Japan to death. There were countless Righteous Soldiers(의병) against the Japanes Empire whose names couldn't be remembered in history, but Yi Wan-Bal's name was recorded by his former teacher, Jeong Dae-pil, who established the basis to 'remember' the historical and patriotic figure, not losing the figure into 'oblivion'.
Jeong's records and short statements in books like the 『Ma -echeonyarok(梅泉野錄)』, proves the existence of the man 'Yi Wan-Bal.' Jeong's writings on Yi Wan-Bal's achievements as the Righteous Solder may have some minor errors, but the major story corresponds to the historical events. Yi's case proves that the writings and books by the members of the Neo-Confucian society in the late Daehan Empire and Japanes Occupation, is a good resource to rediscover the forgotten figures in the Independence Movements and researches in the history of the Korean Independence Movement, calling for more detailed researches on the writings by the Neo-Confucians of the era.
