Neo-Confucianism in Joseon period intensely discussed human nature rather than the formation of the universe. This philosophical discussion may be attributed to difference between thinking structure unfolded with Li(理) and Qi(氣). Jungheon Hwang Cheol-won(重軒黃澈源) is a secondary disciple who inherited learning of Nosa Gi Jeong-jin(蘆沙奇正鎭). Gi Jeong-jin inherited neo-Confucianism of Yulgok Yi Yi(李珥) but Hwang Cheol-won focused more on ‘Li(理)’ which serves as ultimate grounds for phenomenon while Yi Yi’s theory put more stress on Qi(氣), developing into theory of Li Qi and philosophy of mind. Studying under Jeong Eui-rim(鄭義林) and Jeong Jae-gyu(鄭載圭) who were called the tertiary disciples of Nosa school(蘆沙學派), Hwang Cheol-won established his own neo-Confucian theory. Particularly when Nosa study was criticized by other schools, Hwang Cheol-won firmly insisted the reasoning system focusing on ‘Li’, advocating Nosa study. This paper is to develop Hwang Cheol-won’s theory of mind, mainly focusing on illustrious virtue(明德) and the theory of moral mind and human mind(人心道心說). Prior to that discussion, this paper examines succession of Gi Jeong-jin’s studies; deals with aspects that illustrious virtue which serves as numinous natures in the theory of mind is united with Taegeuk (太極) and; unfolds the theory of moral mind and human mind based on one’s perception with numinous emptiness in mind. Based on Hwang Cheol-won’s reasoning with more focus on ‘Li’, what he generally points out is representation of Li which directs the perception with numinous emptiness in mind in the phenomenal world towards the moral mind(道心), rooted from ‘rightness of life obligation.’ His way of thinking suggests the spirit of Protect the Orthodox, Repel the Heterodox(衛正斥邪) that tried to guard traditional values and to block invasion of Japanese imperialism in the midst of eastern penetration of Western powers.

조선은 19세기에 이르러 국내외적으로 혼란하여 전통적 가치 체계가 크게 흔들렸다. 당시 유학자들은 위기의식을 느끼며 전통 사상과 문화 수호에 전념하였다. 특히 그들의 성리학 이론은 氣보다 주로 理를 중시하는 理氣心性論을 전개하였다. 重軒黃澈源은 화순출신으로 蘆沙奇正鎭의 학문을 계승한 재전제자이다. 기정진은 李珥의 성리학을 계승하지만, 이이의 ‘기’ 중시적 경향을 벗어나 현상의 궁극적 근거가 되는 ‘리’를 더 중시하는 리기심성론을 전개하였다. 황철원은 노사학파의 3대로 제자로 불린 鄭義林과 鄭載圭에게 수학하며 성리설을 구축하였다. 특히 그는 당시 타학파로부터 노사학이 비판받자 ‘리’ 중시적 사유체계를 통해 노사학을 옹호하였다. 본 논문은 황철원이 전개한 리기심성론 가운데 明德과 人心道心說을 위주로 고찰한 것이다. 내용은 먼저 노사학 계승성에 의한 리 중시적 理發說을 살펴보고, 그 다음 심성론 가운데 虛靈本體로서의 明德太極說의 일면을 다루었으며, 끝으로 마음의 속성인 虛靈神明과 虛靈知覺의 體用과 人心道心論 등을 기술하였다. 그의 논지는 ‘리’ 중시적 사유체계를 토대로 마음의 허령지각이 ‘성명의 올바름에서 근원하여’ 도심으로 향하도록 하는 리의 발현을 강조하였다. 다시 말하면 마음의 의식적 작용의 주체를 본체의 리로 그가 간주한 것은 도심에 의한 마음의 주재성이 현실세계에서 올바르게 드러나도록 하는 것이다. 그의 이러한 사유양상에는 당시 서세동점의 물결에 전통적 가치를 수호하면서 일제의 침략성을 저지하려는 위정척사의 정신도 깃들어 있었음을 엿볼 수 있을 것이다.
