In case of dancers who do not follow concrete texts, their creations are usually weak in the composition of work plot or expression of characters. In this case, a lot of them depend on the splendor of their skills due to such excessive abstractness and ambiguity of expression. Even a contemporary work preferentially emphasizing the expression of movements should have its own plot within the work, and the theme should be able to give a kindness to deliver touching moments or images to audiences in each method. Through this problem, the choreographers need to seek for ‘another choreography method’. As a part of seeking for the method, this study selected the 「symbolism」, and then intensively explored the utilization of symbolism and the meanings through <The Lady from the Sea> by Ibsen who completed this dance work based on a realism play. For the analysis on the utilization of symbolism and its meanings, this study closely observed the symbolism of movement, objet, and sound, and this study drew that the accurate through line, contrast, and continuous repetition were mobilized to show the symbolism. In order to analyze the implicative meanings and utilization of symbolism, this study intensively analyzed N group’s video <The Lady from the Sea> performed in 2012, and compared various writings by critics and the same work by a Norwegian choreographer. In conclusion, the symbolism of the dance work based on Ibsen’s realism play sought for ‘another choreography’ method by intensively using the concentration and implication with the mobilization of thorough line, contrast, and continuous repetition within the extreme and simple plot of concealing and revealing. The choreographers’ utilization of symbolism has been already established as their own choreography methods based on their various experiences, and also persuasively shown the effects.
