Today, museum has grown into a cultural icon representing the cultural level of a country or a city. In this respect, museum architecture has became strong symbolism and try to express various symbolism in exterior as well as interior. This study define entrance hall in museum as symbolic space revealed exhibition subject and purpose most intentionally, and provide basic material of standards for museum architectural design with type of symbolic expression by floor design. The analysis results of symbolism of floor design for entrance hall in museum are as follows; the types of symbolic expression of floor design for entrance hall in museum are classified as ‘analogy - range of application - design method of symbolism’ stage. Subject of analogy is classified as context around, exhibition theme and spacial function. Range of application is classified as overall symbolism and partial symbolism. Design method of symbolism is classified as colors, graphic, pattern and etc. Various types of symbolic expression can be made by combination of each stage’s items. The results of case studies are as follows; art museum show tendency to context around is subject of analogy, science museum and memorial museum show tendency to exhibition theme is subject of analogy, and the larger the museum, the profounder the symbolism. Range of application show tendency to set ‘overall symbolism’ for ‘context around’, and ‘partial symbolism’ for ‘exhibition theme’. Design method of symbolism can be used variously without distinction of subject of analogy and range of application.
