The thesis of this article is that Pannenberg’s notion of theodicy is not coherent as long as he preserves the traditional notion of the omnipotent God that determines all events of the world. It can be said that the advantage of Pannenberg’s theodicy lies in the practical response to evil and suffering rather than in its exposition of the logical problem of evil. Pannenberg’s practical theodicy shows how God’s love and power can be seen to defeat genuine evil in the eschatological vision. It focuses on what God does to combat evil; what human beings should do regarding evil; and how humankind can relate to God. However, the predicament of Pannenberg’s theodicy comes out of his inconsistency on the logical problem of evil. His failure has three dimensions: the problem of the understanding of freedom, the traditional notion of divine power, and the issue of eschatological uncertainty. Pannenberg, in fact, could not escape the criticism of determinism because the God of the future is also the omnipotent God who decides the course of history. To obtain a better vision for the problem of theodicy, I propose that the notion of divine power should be revised to be persuasive rather than coercive.
