Gonzalo Sobejano classified the Spanish postwar novel into existential novels, social novels, and structural or experimental novels. However, as many critics point out, Ana Maria Matute's works do really not fit into any specific literary trend, but rather represent an independent domain in themselves. This is related to the fact that she wrote many works on the subject of ‘childhood’ in addition to the fact that she developed a very original writing style. By the way, we can think of childhood as a central element of Matute’s literature as a device that effectively reveals the nature of literature, beyond the general interpretation of describing children’s worlds as children’s literature or as a criticism of the world created by adults. She did not view childhood as a mere phase in the process of becoming an adult, as it used to be considered, but as an independent, closed and complete world in itself. We examine the meaning of the ‘forest’ and the ‘room’ as specific spaces that symbolize it, and then explore how childhood functions as a hermetic world that reveals to her the nature of a kind of literature which is radically different from the real world of grown-ups. In order to derive this aspect, we investigate the meaning of childhood as an allegory of Matute’s literary ontology, analyzing “Don Payasito”, “The King” “The Dry Branch” and “The Birds” in Tales of Artamila.
