This article traces the evolution of U.S. extended deterrence to the Korean Peninsula and criticizes the issue of weakening credibility that some scholars have contended. Comparing with U.S. extended deterrence to the NATO, it argues that the U.S. has shown relatively stable extended deterrence assurance to Korea. Starting with conventional deterrence without nuclear weapons right after the Korean War, U.S. extended deterrence to Korea has evolved into one that uses the full range of military capabilities, including U.S. nuclear, conventional, and missile defense capabilities. This article argues that the U.S. has shown a pretty credible extended deterrence assurance to Korea.
