This paper studies the theory of human nature in Huainanzi 淮南子 from the perspective of history of philosophy in particular focusing on the notions of desire 欲 and emotion 情. According to Huainanzi, the nature 性 is the natural property of objects, and objects have their own nature. A similar point holds in the case of human. The human nature is characterized as sound body and no desires in mind. As the human nature is damaged by desires, specifically, by sensual desires, they must be removed. A sage preserves his nature by removing sensual desires. This leads to an ideal governance. This claim emphasizes the fact that Taoism requiring the conformity to the natural properties has an important implication to the preservation of social and political order. The human nature is also damaged by emotions. In particular, emotions have a bad impact on politics by causing improper behavior. Thus, emotions must be removed and mind cultivation 心術 is a way to do so. By cultivating mind, one can remove sensual desires and furthermore remove emotions. This emphasizes the fact that Taoism requiring the removal of emotions is an appropriate theory for the preservation of social order. The theory of human nature in Huainanzi is a theory organizing the notions of the nature, desire and emotion. This allows Huainanzi to respond to the criticism raised by its competitors. In this respect, the theory of human nature in Huainanzi contains criticisms against Confucianism and Mohism. Given the above points, we need to reconsider the view that the human nature in Huainanzi is grasped by emptiness and tranquility 虛靜 and also the view that the theory of human nature in Huainanzi is a summation of Confucian and Taoistic theories of human nature.
