The focus of interpretation of Confucian classics underwent the most important transformation in the history of Song and Yuan Dynasties, that is, the study of Five Classics(五经) centered on “li(礼)” evolved into the study of Four Books(四书) centered on “Li(理)”. Previous scholars often paid attention to the upgrading process of the Four Books, but ignored the undercurrent of returning “rites” with this process. This undercurrent is called the trend of “returning rites” thought in this paper. Although the trend of “returning rites” thought was mainly characterized by revising or even criticizing Zhu Xi school, in essence, it pointed to the study of returning rites of “Five Classics”. Due to the wide range of contents and the limitation of length, the above thesis will be divided into two parts. As the first part, this paper takes the theory of “Xin(心)” as the main axis to analyze the dominant function of “Xin(心)” and the structure of Xin-Tong-Xing-Qing(心统性情) discussed by Zhu Xi, and outlines the differentiation and fission of “Xin” based on the studies of Zhu Xi’s successors. The second part will present the elaborate development of “Xin(心)” theory centered on Korean Neo-Confucianism, and then reveal the rationality and inevitability of the trend of “returning rites” thought through the revival of the “managing Xin(心) by Li(礼)” theory.
