This paper examines the inter-party dynamics among the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Kōmeitō, and the Japan Restoration Party (JRP) by elucidating the development of electoral balance as well as strategic policy positions over the past decade. Specifically, it sheds light on the resilience of the JRP in both local and national contexts, and how the party’s electoral expansion in Osaka and the proximity of its policy preferences to that of the dominant LDP in the national setting have affected the intra-coalition relations between the LDP and Kōmeitō. The analyses suggest that the JRP’s unrivaled popularity in Osaka and adjunct regions has imposed significant challenges on the Kōmeitō, whose strategic competence has been undermined by the rightward-looking party. Furthermore, in terms of policy agendas, the re-rise of the ‘third party’ induced the convergence of policy preferences among the three parties, rather than diversification.
