The purpose of this research was to find and compare the food safety perception and perceived risk, and willingness to pay for safer foods of Korean and Chinese consumers. Data were collected by online questionnaire survey in 2021 from Korean and Chinese housewives and in-depth interview was performed to supplement survey results. Research findings showed that food safety perception level of Korean and Chinese consumers were similar, which was slightly lower than 70 out of 100 points. However, safety perception for each stage of food production, food manufacturing, food sales, and food consumption was different between Korea and China, indicating subjective safety perception depends on cultural & social background. Consumers' perceived risks on 15 food hazards were higher among Korean consumers than Chinese consumers in general. Chinese consumers were willing to pay more for a safe food than Korean consumers. The effects of food safety perception and the perceived risks of food hazards on the WTP for safer foods varied by countries. Based on the results, suggestions were made to manage the food safety perception of each country and to build an insight for international food trade between two countries.
