As information is poured through visual media, the importance of visual communication that understands, interprets, and communicates with others is increasing. Accordingly, research has been actively conducted to cultivate visual communication skills. Research related to visual communication related to the art subject mainly focused on the development of educational programs linked to visual culture, but research related to traditional art was not actively conducted.
This study expanded the scope of application of visual communication, which was mainly applied to visual culture, and applied it to craft education using the symbolism of patterns and investigated its impact. To this end, symbolic patterns were examined from a semiotic perspective and visual communication elements of crafts were extracted. In addition, the 16th class program, including the exhibition appreciation of the Seoul Craft Museum, was organized and applied to 19 fourth-grade elementary school students in connection with the 2015 revised curriculum that presented museum appreciation education.
Through this study, it was found that the activity of understanding crafts containing symbolic patterns and using them to produce crafts had a significant effect on learners" visual communication. Although there was a difference in the method of imparting symbolism to traditional patterns and the way students gave symbolism, it is significant in that it expanded the scope of visual communication, which was mainly linked to visual culture, and applied it to craft education using symbolization.
