This study identifies the problems and possibilities raised through a non-face-to-face museum education program and its process. Due to COVID-19, the Iron Museum changed and ran the annual ‘Iron Culture Experience Class’ into a non-face-to-face program. However, while preparing the program, the museum faced a few problems; how to bring out the unique characteristics of the museum in a non-face-to-face educational program and the meaningful participation in non-face-to-face conditions. Hence, setting these problems as a case-study subject, this study analyzes the entire process of the non-face-to-face of the Iron Culture Experience Class, “Now! What a Bright Moment!” Furthermore, the surveys and in-depth interviews of the participants drive the implications of the programs.
The museum could obtain and discuss; the understanding and application of the non-face-to-face learning environment, the new methods and expandability of educational programs, and finally, the possibility of extending the museum community. Furthermore, the smooth communication between the museum and the participants leads to discovering its characteristics and the meaning of participation. In other words, the characteristics of the museum and the meaning of participation increase in the process of sharing and exchanging the results reflecting the museum’s objective and the participants’ input.
This study is meaningful in setting a research problem while coping with the crisis. The researcher tried to closely examine the entire process of designing, running, and evaluating educational programs.
A detailed look at the situation of small local museums derived from the research process and discussions on strengthening the digital literacy and capacity of museum personnel remain as follow-up studies.
