Wu Ming-yi (1971-) is probably the most well-known Taiwanese author who was published his fourth novel, The Magician on the Skywalk in 2011. This novel was adopted into a TV drama of the same name by director Yang Ya-che in 2021. The article argues whether Wu or Yang, to some extent, both works pay homage to Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien, and his one of masterpieces Dust in the Wind (1986). According to theoretical framework of transmedia narratives, the study can explore the diverse range of strategies employed in the adaptation of cinematic text. On the one hand, Wu’s novel Magician on the Skywalk presents the typical frame of metafiction, having complicated “fiction within fiction” as well as texts from other media genres. On the other hands, Yang’s TV drama can be regarded as the legacy of expanded cinema. The article not only deals with an intertextual references between pretext (Wu’s novel) and hypertext (Yang’s TV drama), but also considers the transition from the domination of mainstream cinema as the primary form of moving-image entertainment to wider acceptance of various forms of cinematic presentation. It closely analyses the shots, sounds, and camera movements in selected scenes in Dust in the Wind and The Magician on the Skywalk in order to provide an understanding of how Yang’s coming-of-age TV drama makes a challenge for documentary-style realism of Taiwan New Cinema in the 1980s.
