Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of emergency simulation education, including clinical reasoning activities based on the OPT model, on clinical reasoning competency and emergency response self-efficacy among nursing students.
Methods: Data were collected from September 8 to December 1, 2021. Data from 110 nursing students (48 in the control group and 62 in the experimental group) were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23.0.
Results: The clinical reasoning capability of the experimental group was 3.90±0.53. This was higher than that of the control group (3.62±0.54), and there was a significant difference between the two groups (t=-2.69, p=.008). However, there was no significant difference in the level of self-efficacy based on basic life support between them (t=1.47, p=.143).
Conclusion: Emergency simulation education, including clinical reasoning activities based on the OPT model, was effective in enhancing clinical reasoning capabilities. Therefore, the inclusion of clinical reasoning activities based on the OPT model in simulation training may be useful in increasing the clinical reasoning capability of nursing students.
