This report will discuss the relationship between studies of medieval Yezo and primary historical sources.
The biggest bottleneck in the study of medieval Yezo is the paucity of primary historical sources. For this reason, attempts have been made in the past to utilize archaeological materials and historical sources from the northeastern part of Japan.
In this report I would like to point out the problems of past research in utilizing primary historical sources. The primary historical sources have been arbitrarily interpreted, and as a result, incorrect views have been disseminated through the interpretation of archaeological materials and compiled historical documents such as “SINRA NO KIROKU” based on mistranslations. I hope to correct this in some small way in this report.
