This study aimed to investigate the perceptions and needs of early childhood teachers for digital competence and digital competence education. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted targeting 424 teachers of 3 to 5 year olds in kindergartens and daycare centers located in a metropolitan area in Korea. The findings are as follows. First, early childhood teachers" awareness of digital competence terms and social digitization levels was high. However, early childhood teachers perceived their digital competence levels to be average. Second, early childhood teachers had little experience in digital competence education, but said that digital competence education was very necessary to strengthen teachers" professionalism. In terms of digital competence education content, teachers believed such education was required to understand the future direction of early childhood education and to use digital technology in the field. This study is meaningful in that it confirmed early childhood teachers’high levels of demand for digital competence education, and comprehensively examined their needs in terms of goals, contents, methods, and operational aspects for digital competence education. In conclusion, this study suggests that digital competency education based on the needs of early childhood teachers is necessary to strengthen the digital-based professionalism of early childhood teachers.
