Report Errors

The purpose of this paper is to examine conceptually how the traditional concept of ‘Immin’ met the ideas of modern ‘people’ in the West and was transformed and established in Korean society. To this end, 『Seo yu gyeon mun』, published through two translation processes during the modern period, was the subject of analysis, and the process of introducing and settling Western modern concepts was discussed through the concept of ‘Immin’ in 『Seo yu gyeon mun』.
Before modern times, the ‘Immin’ were only considered to be governed. However, after the introduction of Western enlightenment ideas into Korean society, ‘Immin’ has been changed to a term referring to the subject of modern state construction and state members.
However, it has not been recognized as a sovereign political entity. The concept of ‘Immin’ in 『Seo yu gyeon mun』 was not the same concept as ‘people’ in the West knew, but a unique modern object that independently blossomed under the rule of the monarch. This shows that Yoo Gil-jun tried to transform and accept the modern concepts of the West, rooted in the tradition of studying abroad(and via actual studies).
