Sim Dae-yun's thoughts on the study of rites, which are shown in his discussion on the old annotation and new annotation of Tangong of The Book of Rites, are found to be much different, in diverse aspects, from the rites system of Heo Jeon who was a contemporary of Sim Dae-yun in the mid-19th century and who inherited Toegye's authentic academic tradition. In the study on The Book of Rites, conducted by the scholars including Heo Jeon as a member of Namin School, who inherited Toegye's s academic tradition, The Book of Rites was analyzed generally based on the rational theory and philosophical viewpoints, on the viewpoint and attitude of restoring ancient rites (ancient scriptures), and on regarding the rites as important as a means of achieving the purpose of the Sacred Book.* * Yu Gwon-jong, 「A Study on Toegye School's Analysis of The Book of Rites, The Study of Toegye and Korean Culture No. 36. On the other hand, found in the study on The Book of Rites, conducted by Sim Dae-yun, who inherited the tradition of Hagok's Wang Yangming's study as a member of Soron School were the mistrustful attitude about the ancient scriptures on the Three Rites, an attempt to distinguish between scriptural texts and non-scriptural texts, argument over the previous kings' distortion of rites by old annotation and new annotation, the establishment of rite values through the practice of self discipline and governing the nation, the viewpoint on rites as ordinary acts based on the human way, human rites, and human sentiments, the emphasis on applying the same ancestral rites in all classes of people, including nobility, scholars and grassroots, the emphasis on the need of flexibility and changeability in applying rites, and the defending of the viewpoints of rites, held by respectable figures including Confucius, Zengzi and Zisi. The rite characteristics of Sim Dae-yun's discussions on the old and new annotation of Tangong of The Book of Rites - which include "humans are right the rite," "morality is right the rite," "routines are right the rite," and "sentiments are right the rite" - are much different from the pre-19th century Neo-Confucian order system's viewpoints of rites which embrace "Reasoning is right the rite," "Heaven is right the rite," "Character is right the rite," and "Sacredness is right the rite." As such, Sim Dae-yun's viewpoint is profound in Korea' history of rites.
