In order to clarify the aesthetic significance of Yangming school of mind, this study defined the three major doctrines of Yangmingism as Substance aesthetics which considered that mind and things had the same substance, Practical aesthetics of studying through practice, and Experiential aesthetics of studying mind, and it intended to aesthetically understand Yangming school of mind. From the perspective of Yangming’s ‘doctrine that mind is the very Principle’, there is no value beyond the subject of value. Yangming’s thought that there is no things without mind does not mean the actual existence that exists outside of mind but the value existence of the thought that there is no things without mind, which is a kind of imagery that the subject and the object are unified. According to Yangming, the world of meaning can not leave the original existence of ‘mind’, and only when the object enters the core of mind, the core of mind can attach the meaning. It is significant only if the world of object should be put into the spiritual mind and only if the world of object is related to the world of subject. If the world of object leave the contemplation of the subject, it exists as a natural existence, and it has no significance in the subject. Therefore, it can be called the substance aesthetics which considers that mind and things have the same substance. The doctrine of ‘the unity of knowledge and action’ in Yangming school of mind is originally a study of ‘knowledge’ and ‘action’, and they are two aspects of a process. From this point of view, the acquisition of knowledge or the ‘Way’(‘Beauty’) comes from a practical study, and a true knowledge has significance only if all actions are followed. The potential value of the innate knowledge is realized in the process of ‘the unity of knowledge and action’ by completing cultivation of personality. Yangming believed that the aesthetic activity was not only a kind of mental activity but also an attainment of personality of complete goodness in practice. Therefore, it is the practical aesthetics of studying through practice which brings up the tradition of Confucian practical aesthetics to the higher and more self-conscious state. The purpose of the extension of the innate knowledge in Yangming school of mind is to eliminate people’s ‘worldy desires’ and to experience and attain the innate knowledge. Yangming believed that people were able to reach the state of the extension of the innate knowledge only after they clearly realized the innate knowledge and got rid of the world of meaning made in the conventional world. The substance of the mind can not be grasped by using the language, and only the mind can grasp the ‘Way’(‘Beauty’) but can not reach the ‘Way’(‘Beauty’) itself. This kind of Yangming’s intuitive contemplation method is Experiential aesthetics of studying mind that emphasizes the whole enlightenment and grasp by excluding rational analysis.
