The purpose of this paper is to examine fundamental characteristics of Korean middle verbs based on morphological, syntactic, and semantic conditions in English middle verb. Under the premise that there exist middle verbs in Korean, this study critically reviews studies on middle verbs in Korean in recent years. They are realized morphologically either in the same forms as transitive counterparts or in the forms of passives or causatives. Korean middle verb formation has been explained either by NP movement or by lexicon operations. Also, Korean middle verbs not only have similar semantic characteristics as those of English but also idiosyncratic characteristics such as demonstrative modifiers, unspecified verbs, and inseparable possessive relations of NPs.
