Cheondongsangwigo(天東象緯考) is written by Choi, cheon-byeok(崔天璧) in 1708(King Sukjong 34), which is the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮) intellectual's the History of Koryo(高麗史) with the portents. Cheondongsangwigo is a 18-volumed work, 8 books, 64 details, and 1456 articles which are the stories about the portents. The main portent's articles are written on volume 1 (the sky), volume 2 (the earth), volume 3‧4(the sum), volume 5 (the moon), volume 6-13 (the moon, the five-element stars, the 3 enclosures and 28 lunar mansions system), volume 14 (the comet), volume 15-17 (the meteor), volume 18 (etc). The body of the books is composed of the portent's articles and the meaning of the portents. Particularly, the portent's article is mentioned the portents(災異), a short meaning of the portents(占曰), and the events(應驗) which are regarded to appear because of the portents in order. Those articles inform when the portent happened, the meaning of the portent, and the outcome of the portent. This interpretation of portent, the theory of mutual resonance between nature and human beings, appeared during the Han Dynasty, it was already criticized in Northern Song Dynasty. But there's a reason for that this theory was back in the early 18th century Joseon Dynasty. Choi, cheon-byeok took cognizance of organic thought based on GwanSangWanSa(觀象玩辭) in the Book of Changes(周易) instead of the theory of Mutual Resonance between Nature and human beings(天人感應論). The Book of Changes is filled with Sang(象) and Sa(辭), but real intention means do not obsess about the one of Sang and Sa. It means study the changing so that it makes a person to make their good behavior in everything as constantly thought(窮理). It is exactly what GwanSangWanSa means. The portent is regarded as the Book of Changes‘s trigram(卦象), and the event is considered as trigram explanation(卦辭), so that Cheondongsangwigo has caused people to look back on realistic politics through the historical transition of the portents and 응험. The motivation of making this books is probably to prepare for the future.
