Since the mid-1980s, there have been studies in academia that intensively illuminated historical books in the late Joseon Dynasty, but mainly focused on clarifying its historical value by excavating literature materials. Since then, individual studies have been actively conducted on private history books, but few concentrated studies have emerged. The reason for the lack of an integrated discussion on the development and characteristics of the private historical books can be found in the fact that the historical books have not established themselves as a class of literary texts.
Before organizing the research reality of the private history books, it is necessary to first clarify its definition, category, and overall situation of the data. Although South Korean academia has not yet clearly identified the definition and category of private history books, several representative studies can examine the researchers" perceptions of private history books. As a result, the definition of a private historical book is a historical book compiled by an individual, and it is organized into a historical book that confirms a new sense of history that is distinguished from the official history while having a certain history system. We can find the list of historical books written in the late Joseon Dynasty. Which by Lee Deok-moo(李德懋), Lee Kyu-kyung(李圭景), Han Young-woo and so on. And more than 180 kinds of private historical books in this lists.
However, it was confirmed that the professional research on the private history books was poor compared to the size of the data. About 46 of the more than 180 private histories have been studied. More than 120 other private histories have not received much attention.
Compared to the official history book, the private history book shows uniqueness in many aspects, including the method of compilation, data selection, empirical method, historical consciousness, and specific perspectives on historical events. Therefore, the consideration of private history books should be sought as a research method distinct from officail history books. Since there is a wide variety of private books in the late Joseon Dynasty, it is necessary to first perform classification work on them on a certain basis. And we have to consider the private history books by classification. Through this work, it will be possible to ultimately establish the status of the private history books in the history of the late Joseon Dynasty.
