Hemeneutical Suggestions for Interpreting Sentence Sayings in Proverbs 10-31 Kim, Sung jin (Old Testament) The book of Proverbs has been understood as a collection of individual sayings without having structural cohesion and thematic coherence. This lietrary difficulties cause hermeneutical problems in interpretation of the book of Proverbs, especiall proverbial sayings in Prov 10-31. In contrast to this argument, this study proposes holistic approaches to proverbial sayings in Prov 10-31. The rationale for this study is that authors or editors of the book of Proverbs collected individual sayings and arranged them utilizing various liteary methods to produce effective meanings. Accordingly, in order to interpret proverbial sayings, first of all, we need to understand various literary devices used in arrangement of proverbial sayings. For this purpose, this study lists three literary methods adopted in arrangement of proverbial sayings in Prov 10-31. One of the most frequently used literary methods is keyword. Authors and editors of Proverbs collected individual sayings which contains specific words linked thematically, then arranged them as a meaning group to produce teaching on a specific topic. Secondly, literary structure had an important role in both collecting and arranging 44 신학저널 27집proverbial sayings. In Prov 10-31, various types of structural patterns appear, such as acrostics, chiasm, inclusio etc. By using these structural patterns, authors intended to arrange individual sayings in cohesive manner. Thirdly, reconstruction of context is necessary to interpret proverbial sayings in Proverbs. Each individual sayings were collected within a certain literary context. Thus, reconstruction of original context is necessary to understand a role of individual sayings in a collection.
