This paper reintroduces a set of logical problems, which the noncognitivist must face because of her treatment of moral language. These logical problems come in many variants, but we shall focus on the problem of making good of a deductively valid inference pattern, modus ponens. One may infer the ‘consequent’ of a material conditional, provided that the ‘antecedent’ obtains as well. This inference pattern seems to be omnipresent in our ways of thinking about the world, including of course the moral discourse about the world. The noncognitivist analysis of moral language would have to dismiss such a prevalent inference pattern as non-truth-preserving, i.e., deductively invalid. We shall illustrate that this is a huge problem that the noncognitivist must face and deal with in this paper.
