This article discusses problems with John Mackie’s error theory and Richard Joyce’s fictionalism which is grounded in the former theory. Although Mackie denies all the “objective” moral values, he admits that a human society can have a moral institution, by which moral cognitivism is actually possible. Richard Joyce proposes fictionalism, according to which, all moral values and institution in our moral experiences are not real; all moral judgments are “false,” and moral belief should be abandoned. Nevertheless moral institution in actual life should be maintained, he argues, because it gives us some benefit. The author explains and criticizes each theory. According to the fictionalism, moral institution is an illusion. It can mean that it has no authority or persuasiveness to exhort people to carry out moral conducts. So it would be completely incompetent when people prefer chasing their own interests to observing moral norms. Similarly, it cannot mediate moral disagreements. For these reasons, the fictionalism hardly shows, the author argues, that moral institution stands on a stable ground. Mackie’s theory would be a bit better in showing the institution’s stability, thanks to the notion of subjective moral sentiment. But since the error theory rejects moral objectivity and all “objective” values, the author argues, Mackie’s theory would be caught in the same problem.
