This paper examines how the human capital investment changes between pre- and postcareer discontinuity when women are experiencing a career discontinuity in the labor market. In order to this analysis, we use the 1st∼15th wave data of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) provided by Korea Labor Institute (KLI), and have established a panel data of the female employees who experienced the career discontinuity associated with the first childbirth. This paper focuses on the following three channels: the change in return to human capital, the effect of duration of parental leave, and the change in the individual-specific effect related to childbirth. In particular, considering that the effects of the career discontinuity may differ by level of real wages, this paper uses the panel data quantile regression as the empirical approach. According to the results of this paper, the scale of the change in the return of the human capital investment, especially experience and tenure, is differs by the wage levels, and the size of the wage loss appeared to be greater in the high-wage level. In addition, the longer the period of the career discontinuity, the wage loss increases on average and is independent of the characteristics of the job such as industrial and occupational features. Finally, the estimated effects of the individual-specific factors associated with the first childbirth are statistically significant in all quantile levels. It is the contribution of this study to estimate the different changes in the return of experience and tenure by the wage levels using the panel data quantile regression method.
