This study investigates characteristics of Korean women’s labor force participation. Pattern of Korean women’s labor force participation shows M-shape which is also observed in Japan. This M-shape curve of women’s labor force participation flattened around year 2000. However, as number of women who dropped from the labor market increased after marriage or childbirth, pattern of Korean women’s labor force participation came to show much clearer M-shape again after year 2000. This change of pattern of women’s labor force participation results from increasing educational attainment, postponement of marriage and childbearing in Korea.
Marriage and childbirth are still critical barriers to hinder Korean women from pursuing careers without disruption. Using raw sample data from Census 2015, this research investigated experience of career discontinuities for women. Multinomial logistic analysis shows that age, education, urban/rural residence, type of housing, age at first marriage and marriage cohort are significantly related to the probabilities of the exit from the labor market because of marriage and/or childbearing.
