The aim of this research is to examine the causes and the characters of the clan feuds in the 16th century Scottish highlands. The 16th century in the Scottish highlands witnessed a situation of struggles of every clan against every clan. A foray of a clan against neighbours was the order of the day. Although the central government had managed to bring an end to the rule in the Lords of Isles by the end of 15th century, it only brought the political power vacuum instead of the law and order in the highlands. Since most feuds were between neighbouring clans, the feuds were risen from local issues. The issue of land control was the single most important cause for the clan feuds as the land itself was considered to be imperative for the existence of the clans. Many other issues such as fishing right, water control, marriage and inheritance problems, insult and competition of royal favour could cause a bloodfeud. One of the characters of the clan feud is atrocity. The most feuds ended with violence of inhumanity which had never seen in any Christian society. The atrocity included slaughtering of civilians, murdering people in the worship, and derogation of corpses. These could be attributed to the highlanders' belief that the dead members of their own clan want a vengeance in a way of shedding blood, and that their honour could be kept only by taking the revenge. The revenge was a prime mover of the continuing feuds. State and church never had a proper role in reducing clan feud and its atrocity. This was due to the distinctive corse of the highlands history. Until the end of 15th century Highlands was theoretically a part of Scotland, not in practice. The clan feuds in the 16th century could be counted as a huge, but inevitable cost for the modern state building.
